NPDCSNJ Training Series: Networking for Nonprofit Organization Leaders

NPDCSNJ Training Series: Networking for Nonprofit Organization Leaders

Wednesday, November 5, 2025 (7:00 PM - 8:30 PM) (EST)

Description

Overview:

Networking is a marketing activity, not a sales activity. This course will present an introduction to the art of first “intersecting” with and, ultimately, “connecting” with individuals you have selected as personal or professional “targets.” It will include tools on identifying targets, what to say (i.e., an “elevator speech”), prioritizing helping your targets rather than being helped by them, and a “live” practice session in front of other participants in the course…so they can provide valuable feedback and so you have a chance to practice.

Objectives:

The participant will be able to understand and actualize:

  • The value “knowing yourself,” including the inherent advantage that you have because you aren’t selling anything
  • Why someone would/should take your phone call or respond to your email
  • How people find you and what your marketing looks like
  • Who your strategic partners are
  • How you are different from everyone else who does what you do
  • Planning your work, including a CRM program to maintain your data, connect on social media, and schedule follow-up activities
  • Building a VIP list and attending selected events at which key targets will play a role
  • Becoming a subject-matter expert (SME), so you can “teach someone something.”

Course Content:

The 55-38-7 Rule…and more:

  • How You Look—including smiling, dress, posture, eye contact, and avoiding distractions
  • How You Sound—including projecting your voice, adjusting your pace, tone, and inflection
  • What You Say (often referred to as your “Elevator Speech”)—including knowing your audience and its vocabulary, anticipating and actually inviting questions, and suggesting “next steps”; using only “jargon” audience members understand
  • Handling Nerves—including welcoming “nerves”, channeling nervous energy into concentration and expressiveness
  • Preparing Like a Pro—including having a stock “three-minute speech” for unexpected occasions
